A close friend is currently watching the movie Blindness. It is interesting to see the impact that the movie is having on him, he can barely stand watching it because of its darkness and its portrayal of human behavior. He is in the next room watching it on his laptop and has stormed out of the room several times already. One of those times he said: “Does it have a happy ending? Because I don’t know if I am gonna keep watching it. I am not entertained.”
I have watched the movie, saw it when it first came out and one of the reasons I enjoyed it was specifically that, its portrayal of human behavior and how we, given the circumstances, can become very dark egoistical people. I wouldn’t give him details of how the movie ends, that’s not my style, I just told him that if he didn’t want to see it he should go and read the outcome on wikipedia, I don’t want to just spoil a movie. That way he has the choice to either finish watching or read about it.
But one of his comments made me think, he mentioned not being entertained. This made me realize that even though entertainment is one of the main reasons people make most movies, there are a lot of movies that are not made for entertainment. They are there to drive a message, the writer of the story wants to experience something that we may be missing from our reality in order to make us more aware of the reality that surrounds our “perfect” lives. Movies like Blindness, Precious and Crash are not for entertainment, many moments in these can be considered torture but they open our understanding to the reality that while we are sitting in the comfort of our living room or movie theatre there is a world in suffering and pain looking for answers.
Someday I want to make movies and even though I would like to entertain people I also want to make people think, think about themselves, the lives and lies they are living. I want to take people outside their comfort zones and make them realize that life is more than what they are experiencing and that, sadly, movies like the ones mentioned above are just small glimpses of realities that are happening right at this moment.
So, what movie stirs you up without necessarily entertaining you? Do you remember the last movie that after finish watching it kept your mind running?
Oh, by the way, he finished watching it.
