Blindness: It’s Not All Entertainment

A close friend is currently watching the movie Blindness. It is interesting to see the impact that the movie is having on him, he can barely stand watching it because of its darkness and its portrayal of human behavior. He is in the next room watching it on his laptop and has stormed out of the room several times already. One of those times he said: “Does it have a happy ending? Because I don’t know if I am gonna keep watching it. I am not entertained.”

I have watched the movie, saw it when it first came out and one of the reasons I enjoyed it was specifically that, its portrayal of human behavior and how we, given the circumstances, can become very dark egoistical people. I wouldn’t give him details of how the movie ends, that’s not my style, I just told him that if he didn’t want to see it he should go and read the outcome on wikipedia, I don’t want to just spoil a movie. That way he has the choice to either finish watching or read about it.

But one of his comments made me think, he mentioned not being entertained. This made me realize that even though entertainment is one of the main reasons people make most movies, there are a lot of movies that are not made for entertainment. They are there to drive a message, the writer of the story wants to experience something that we may be missing from our reality in order to make us more aware of the reality that surrounds our “perfect” lives. Movies like Blindness, Precious and Crash are not for entertainment, many moments in these can be considered torture but they open our understanding to the reality that while we are sitting in the comfort of our living room or movie theatre there is a world in suffering and pain looking for answers.

Someday I want to make movies and even though I would like to entertain people I also want to make people think, think about themselves, the lives and lies they are living. I want to take people outside their comfort zones and make them realize that life is more than what they are experiencing and that, sadly, movies like the ones mentioned above are just small glimpses of realities that are happening right at this moment.

So, what movie stirs you up without necessarily entertaining you? Do you remember the last movie that after finish watching it kept your mind running?

Oh, by the way, he finished watching it.

My Life… Lately

I should be sleeping. Why? Well for starters this week I am working 70 hours. Crazy, I know. I don’t know what has happened to me. I don’t do stuff like this. I mean, I work but wow. Ha. Not only that but I started a new class for my Masters this week: Entertainment Business Finance. Numbers are amongst my worst enemies along with pickle covered amphibians and robot skeletons with pink g-strings. I like the direction that my life is taking, not so much the direction this post is taking though. 2010 is being great and it all started with jumping from a plane.

I felt like doing some writing and just leaving a little mark of this specific time in my life. I am pretty sure that this time will be very important because I see that many things are stirring inside of me and many decisions will be made soon. It really feels weird, I get up every day at 6:00 am, get ready, make some coffee, go to my part time job. Work. Go home, eat a quick lunch and then go to my full time job. Then home, wash, rinse, repeat. Forgive me if this blog is a little scatter minded but I just want to see things from the outside for a few minutes. Speaking of scattered minds it’s almost 1am and someone around here is playing Thriller a bit too loud… Ok had to get up and deal with it… Actually my friend Dallen went and knocked at my neighbor’s door and they stopped it. And with that I lost my inspiration for this great post.

Oh! I’m going to New Zealand in less than a month for my best friend’s wedding… Cue the music… The moment I wake up, before I put on my makeup, I say a little prayer for you! Here’s a pic of the love birds.

Now that you know a little of what my days look like… What about yours? Anything exciting going on?

Modern Family Meets Lady GaGa… and Alejandro

Two of my favorite things together. Modern Family and Lady GaGa! Did I call GaGa a thing? I guess I did!

Check this video of Jesse Tyler Ferguson singing Alejandro! I love it!

Christina Aguilera is Not Herself Tonight, So… Who is She?

Last night Christina Aguilera released her video for her latest single: “Not Myself Tonight”. And maybe this is the idea behind the video but she really isn’t herself on that video.  The video is edgy, raw and seems to me a little desperate. The resemblance to Lady GaGa videos is  clearly seen.  My problem is that I see Christina as one of the best singers out there, on vocals alone she can blow anyone out of the water, she really doesn’t need to try too hard.

Again, maybe this was the idea behind it, to get people talking by being a GaGa copycat, therefore not being herself tonight. I know, I know, she has done “dirty” stuff before, and yes, GaGa has also taken pointers from others, but then she goes to a whole new level of craziness. That… didn’t work for Christina. Check these photo comparisons from Xtina’s new video and GaGa’s video.  And the video after the jump… if you dare, just as a little warning: it has some strong content.

American Idol’s Downward Spiral

**Spoilers ahead**

The downward spiral continues. Say what you want but I don’t think Siobhan should’ve been eliminated tonight. Yeah she screams a lot and her hyena screams last night were a bit too much, but come on, there are other people there which are less exciting than her. At least her weirdness provided something to look forward to.  What happened with a season that the judges mentioned as one where girls would rule? It has become a sausage fest, and well the sausages left are not too exciting. I still wish Alex Lambert would’ve gone through to the top 12, yeah he looked scared pretty much all the time but he was very good. Now it is up to Crystal Bowersox to single-handedly beat the crap out of all those mediocre singers.

This is the order that Crystal should kick them out:
Big Mike – Let’s get rid of him before he gets hired by Ambien and puts the whole universe to sleep. Spinning piledriver, Crystal.
Aaron Kelly – What is this kid still doing here? David Archuleta was much better and I’m not even a fan of Archie. Triple uppercut, Crystal.
Casey James – He’s pretty talented but I really don’t see the appeal. Punch through his sunken chest, Crystal.
Lee Dewyze – I really like Lee’s voice but he’s starting to bore me and on stage he has the personality of a pickle. Roundhouse kick to the face, Crystal.

Pretty sure this post shows how bored I really am with this season of Idol.

By the way, I wonder if anyone will even go to see this group on tour. I went last year mainly to see Adam and Megan Joy and the year before to see David Cook. This year… Not even Crystal or Siobhan make it worth it. I guess I’ll just enjoy seeing Lady GaGa in July.

Goodbye Siobhan, hopefully we’ll see you somewhere after this.
