Dear Britney: Don’t Hold This Against Me

20110329-111109.jpg

Since the late 90′s Britney Spears has been on our radar. Like it or not you know her music, she has had a great number of songs which have been extremely popular. It seems everyone was obsessed and loved Britney and her Pop music. Even one of my closest friends back home made a fan-site for her; I still remember his angelfire site dedicated to what many were calling The Princess of Pop. Through the years, Britney has had a very interesting career and one that has become typical in a sense. A roller coaster is a good way to describe it. Some good hits and performances, tainted with several breakdowns and drama, sprinkled with some other hits.

Success, Breakdown, Minor Success, Breakdown, Comeback.

I like Britney. I like Pop music. I love catchy music, as crappy as it can be. Hello, I even like Ke$ha. But, I wouldn’t call myself Britney’s biggest fan. I used to like watching her videos, most of her MTV Awards performances were great, I especially liked the one with Madonna and Christina Aguilera, which brought a lot of drama because… gasp… Madonna kissed the two “princesses”. Enter Christina Aguilera. I know that they both can have a different appeal, but Christina can really sing. I personally believe she has, to this day, one of the best voices out there. Yes, sometimes she can over do it, but that’s part of the appeal, I like someone that can just play around with her voice like that. Britney doesn’t have that voice, and that’s okay, she is a great performer. But something that has turned me off to her as an artist through the years has been her lip-syncing; I don’t remember watching a live performance in which she didn’t lip-sync.

Now, after having two kids, a couple of failed marriages, shaving her head and several breakdowns, she’s back… again. Her new album is pretty solid and I am pretty sure it will sell well, I like her first single released. I don’t like to compare singers because as I stated earlier all of them had their own appeal. But as my friend Jessica tweeted:”Britney and Christina look like they are trying so hard to keep up with Lady Gaga. It is sad…”. I totally see this. Christina had, what was expected to be an amazing comeback, last year. It was very, very bland. Her album and singles failed to impress the critics and were welcomed by lukewarm sales. Add this to several other flukes, including missing some verses of the Star Spangled Banner and stumbling on TV, doesn’t make you look good. Britney on the other hand had her first live performances for her new album on Good Morning America and well, it was pretty, but had some major flaws. First, for some reason Britney is not the dancer she once was. She seemed stiff and uncomfortable. Her dancers and even some of the people on homemade videos shown had better moves. And then there was her infamous lip-syncing again. I just don’t get it. Can lip-synching get worse over the years? I have seen drag queens that can give her a run for her money. It is a little sad. Personally, I prefer at least the effort. You can say what you want about Taylor Swift and Katy Perry’s live singing, it is pretty bad in my opinion, but at least they sing. You can call out Lady Gaga for her antics and craziness but put the girl in front of a piano and she will blow you away. I got to see her live, a two hour show, with no lip-syncing. Plus, she writes her own music.

So, I’m not pitting popstarlettes against each other. To each their own. I hope Britney stays sane through and after this comeback. It looks like she’s doing well and has her life together. I also hope that she brings a little more spunk, does some yoga, gain some flexibility and practices her lip-synching a little better. People don’t want her to be Christina or Gaga, but at least she can strive to be the Britney she used to be.

ADELE: There is Some Music That Just…

… grabs your heartstrings and takes you away to a different place. Music that you could listen to non-stop. This is how I feel about Adele. Not only does she have a fantastic voice with such a unique rasp and tone but her lyrics are hauntingly beautiful.

Her new album, 21, comes out tomorrow in the US and I have been able to listen to it and I have to say that it does not disappoint in the least. After being completely addicted to her first album, 19, I wasn’t sure if she was going to be able to keep up the awesomeness on her sophomore work but it is another work of art. There are many singers that I am a fan of for their antics, their artistry and the entertainment value but there’s something different with Adele. She just sings and talent pours out, no flash, no over-production, just a fantastic voice.

One of the main differences, that is easily heard on 21, is that it shows you that she is in a different place in her life. The lyrics are a bit darker, moody, painful, the combination of these with the intent and feeling she puts in every note makes this what I believe will be one of the best albums of the year, if not the best. It is not hard to see why she won two Grammys on her first album and I would not be surprised if she does it again.

My current favorite song is “Someone Like You”, it is simply amazing. Watch the video below for a live version and just soak it in.

Baby, You’re a Firework!

I don’t consider myself the biggest Katy Perry fan, but her video for her new single “Firework” is great. I gotta say, it even got me a little teary eyed. The lyrics are great and the video is very positive.

And Everything Will Be Fine

2010 has been quite the year. And I like to remind myself how great it has been so far. It’s hard to believe that we are already in October, 2010 will soon end and there comes 2011 which will be even more awesome and the way I see it, much more challenging.

Things have changed. I am definitely not the person I used to be a while back. Well, let me rephrase. I am finally being who I really am. I am happy, I have made some decisions, and am still making some decisions that I know will change my life. Funny thing is that for some this is the easy road, for me this is the hardest, but I will willingly go the way. Being fake is easy for a while but being your awesome self sometimes is hard. People don’t understand, they don’t walk in your shoes so they don’t feel what you feel. They don’t know what you know. It is easy for people to condemn what they don’t really know first hand and sadly that usually becomes a norm.

In other news, I am planning on going to Florida for Thanksgiving.I’m looking forward to it. Will seemy family and hopefully have a great time. Also, I may be meeting my friends Jonathan and Freyza whom I have never met in person, and also see my friend from Puerto Rico, Keila.

Then, Mom and my brother are planning a visit to Dallas for Christmas which shall be grand if it happens.

So, I leave you with this:

Be yourself. Love yourself. Things may be hard. Things may go wrong time and time again. But life is not as serious as it seems. Enjoy others, laugh, love even when it hurts. When things get horrible remember, they will definitely get better even if it takes a while.

Florence and the Machine at the VMAs – Video

I absolutely love Florence+The Machine. Have been listening to her pretty much every day for months. Her whole album is fantastic. She got a VMA for art direction at the Gaga Awards. Check her performance for “Dog Days Are Over” at the Video Music Awards below. No lip-synching!

Adam Lambert Glamnation Tour – Dallas (photos)

It’ no surprise that I’m a fan of  Adam Lambert, this week I got to see him and Allison Iraheta at the Palladium Ballroom here in Dallas. It was a great show, very energetic and fun. Even the waiting was fun; people fainted, old ladies getting their crazy on, gorgeous people in the crowd and good music.

My camera wasn’t working with me that day so I gave up and didn’t get as many great pictures as I did in Gaga’s concert(pics here). The concert was really good, it was no Gaga, but good in all its right. Some of the pics I ended up taking with my iPhone and they ended up being pretty good.

Here you go!

VMAs: Gaga Vs. Gaga

The MTV Video Music Awards are this week and after owning last year’s show with her performance and her awesome outfits Lady Gaga is at it again. This year not so much in the performing, since it has been announced that she will not perform (sadly). Lady Gaga has racked up 13 nominations this year which makes her the artist with the most nominations on a single year on MTV’s history. Pretty stellar.

Bu she has some fierce competition: Herself. For Video of the Year Gaga is nominated twice, for her singles Bad Romance and Telephone, both videos have been extremely successful and could easily beat the other nominees.

Here’s my view. Bad Romance is one of the most creative videos in a long time, it’s creepy, artistic, full of symbolism and drama. Not only that but it is the most watched video of ALL time in youtube with more than 274,000,000 views… that’s a lot. It is filled with ridiculous costumes, awesome dance routines and the “paws up” that now distinguishes her little monsters.

Telephone, on the other hand, is a collaboration with Beyoncé and, apart from being just a music video, it has the form of a short film. You can tell that it was carefully crafted with, again, a lot of symbolism and craft. Artistically, I would say it also is a masterpiece, comparing it to most music videos. Not every artist dares to create a short film for one of their songs, and the ones that do mostly fail.

So, as a music video I tend to go more for Bad Romance, but overall I think I enjoy Telephone better because of the story and the cinematography used. The fact that it is a short film with a progressive story makes me want to watch it again… but again, that doesn’t seem to be a problem with Bad Romance, seeing how many views it has on Youtube… Telephone has a bit more than 84,000,000… in case you were wondering.

What do you think? Which video should get the prize this year?
