Un-Plug-Me

I’ve been sitting in front of my Macbook Pro most of the day doing some schoolwork. My iPhone is next to me in the couch, I’m texting. My iPad is on the other side of the couch… I’ve been using it on my frequent breaks from schoolwork to play some games. Throughout the day I’ve seen several episodes of 30 Rock. A few minutes ago my iPhone notified me that it had 10% of battery left, followed my the same message on my iPad. Then it happened. I felt connected. Too connected.

Far from boasting of how much technology surrounds me this post is quite the opposite. All of a sudden I feel like my mind is cluttered, so much to keep up with, so many applications, so many ways to interact with people. I know, they are a blessing most of the time but suddenly I wish for a break. I wish for a little disconnection. I desire something else. Don’t get me wrong, I like all my gadgets, I enjoy social media, through it I’ve been able to meet some fantastic folks but I feel tired. Do you ever feel tired? Tired of the routine of checking your email? Posting your status to Twitter? Checking all your notifications on Facebook?

I want to disconnect. Not from the people and my interactions with them but with the idea that I have to be connected, all the time. I want to be able to leave my phone at home and not get mad because of it. I want to spend one day without checking any social media sites or my email and not feeling like I missed something. I want to experience life unplugged, at least for a while. I miss silence.

Unplug me.

Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish

This week I started my Business Storytelling and Brand Development class, to my surprise my first assignment was to watch this video, Steve Jobs Commencement Speech at Stanford University. It is filled with great stories and awesome quotes. My favorite being: “Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose”. So, yeah, Steve Jobs is pretty awesome.

Do yourself a favor and watch this. :)

Within Reach

Isn’t it crazy how technology has made us so accessible?
I mean, there are so many ways that people can contact us through now. There was a time when if you wanted to talk to someone you had to see them face to face. Now, there is such a huge number of ways to contact others. This can be both bad and good, bad because I believe it can lose that personal touch and tone that a face to face conversation has. But good, because you can communicate basically at any time, no matter how far away that person is, not only that, you can get to know people that you may have never known in person. For example I have met some incredible people on Twitter and it has developed into communication with them through other mediums. Not only that, but thanks to the iPhone we have access to all these services all the time. Technology even allowed my best friend who is currently in New Zealand to ask his girlfriend who is in Dallas if she wanted to marry him. Unusual? Yes, but pretty awesome as well. Thank you, Skype.
So, yeah technology has placed us in the spot, here are some of the ways that people can reach me, at any time… unless I choose to not answer :)
Skype: rduren7
Phone: (214-850-7263) Calls and Text
iChat: randduren
MySpace and a host of other social networks
And I know I’m missing a bunch…

It’s Friday in New Zealand and I am being part of the #50Pic challenge. I will be posting 50 random pictures of my day. It’s funny because I thought it was gonna be really easy but sometimes it’s a bit difficult to find what to take photos of. If you want to know more on the #50pic challenge visit Joshua White’s blog and you can find the instructions.  It’s basically taking 50 photos during the day.I will be posting them in intervals, maybe 10 per group.
