Okay, here is my list of New Zealand recommendations (I've biased towards some that have religious themes because I thought you might enjoy them as well):

The Penguin History of New Zealand — Michael King (read this and you will know more about NZ history than most New Zealanders. Fun game, ask any New Zealander dates for when Europeans discovered and then settled in New Zealand, most will stumble).

The Matriarch — Witi Ihimaera (this author is in trouble at the moment with plagiarism worries over his latest novel, anyway I think it's a great book, it sent shivers down my spine!)

The Bone People — Keri Hulme (sort of magic realism novel, I think it's the only NZ book to win the Booker Prize, and has some interesting Christian themes).

Black Oxen — Elizabeth Knox (this is one of my favourite books, it's set in different times and worlds and has a huge cast of characters, I've not met many people who've enjoyed it but Elizabeth Knox is one of my favourite authors!)

My Name was Judas — C.K.Stead (A novel told from the perspective of Judas. I won't say anymore incase you read it and I spoil anything, but it's an amazing read, I read it in two sittings!)

New Zealand has some amazing writers, but at the moment this is all that comes to mind!

    The Kite Runner-Khaled Hosseini
    A Thousand Splendid Suns-Khaled Hosseini
    Def. Crazy Love-Francis Chan*
    Forgotten God-Francis Chan
    Anything by Donald Miller
    In Cold Blood- Truman Capote

…these are some that I can think of at the moment, but you have a lot of really good choices. Hope you have an awesome trip bro!
